Pork challenged

Well...

That Word Guy will be very happy to know I finally did manage to catch it on super-sale while placing an Amazon order, and I am now a proud owner of the pan. Put that one on your watch lists, folks... when it's $20, it's a steal. Yes, I finally did listen after the many, many times you told me to get that pan. And it does indeed rock. And if any of the people I buy gifts for in my life cooked, I'd get this pan for them.

Too bad the first meal in it didn't turn out so well.

Was trying a new recipe that is basically pork chops and then a pan sauce with peaces. Sauce was ok, pork chops looked the same raw in their package, but cooked up to one about an inch thick and one about a half inch thick. I got the thick chop. I'm usually not squeamish about pink pork, but my chop was a bit too pink even for me.

Yeah. Dinner ended up being Kraft Mac & Cheese and then a slice of swiss cheese. It coulda been worse.

I am also absolutely in love with the show Top Gear on BBC America. It's like "car show" meets Monty Python. Just awesomeness.

Mmmm... relaxing Sunday.

It's nice when the big weekend summer fast at a nearby town is happening. It means my town in darned near deserted. And I like that.

Did the grocery shopping and running around today. Was actually nice and uncrowded.

Hit the regular store, hit the produce market. Then hit the GFS store to get some half sheet pans and lids for the egg dishes I'm making for the brunch on the 4th.

Then... home for an afternoon of Hausfrau duties. And today that is trying to accomplish four things:

  1. Make Tomato Confit.
  2. Make Garlic Confit.
  3. Make Hummas.
  4. Clean beadspread.
The tomato confit is in the oven. My chickpeas are ready for hummus but I'm waiting on the garlic confit, which is happily sitting on the stovetop. I love my simmer burner.

Just the the beadspread in the washing machine. Time to relax and figure out what the heck is for dinner.

They had some fabulous avocados, ripe and cheap, at the produce market. So we could do mexican for dinner.

Also at the produce market, the had bacon, cheese and potatoe pierogies made by a Mexican company (odd... but cheap and hopefully a nice surprise) and I have polish sausage in the fridge. Don't have cabbage though, so I might do that later in the week.

They had filet mignon on sale at the plain old grocery, always an easy meal.

Got fixings to make a nice stir fry, but that might be tomorrow since I'd like to bake up some frozen eggrolls to go with it, and the oven is still going to be occupied for another 4-5 hours.

Hmm. So I guess that means mexican or steaks. We'll see what the hubby feels like when he gets home from washing his car over at his parents house (the washing of the car is the Sunday religious service for his family - seriously. On the days when us wives also bring over our cars for a wash, it can look like a used car lot over there.)

The typical Saturday.....

Today was spent on the mundane but required tasks of the usual Hausfrau who also has a full time job.

Hit the farmer's market for a few minutes.... first time I've been to the town's farmer's market although I've lived here for 8 years.... pretty sad, actually. I hope it was a poor showing since it was the first farmer's market day for the season. Too many people selling crafts (like the "stuff made from gourds" stand... what the hell?) and not enough food. I did walk away with some tomatoes, strawberries and a small loaf of zucchini bread for breakfast tomorrow.

Then, it was time to brave the masses and hit the plain old grocery store (that'll be POG from here on out) and the produce mart.

Sadly, my grocery store cart is starting to look more and more like the people I pity most.... people with carts full of nothing but all the crap convenience foods that the usual POG has to offer now. But in my defense, that is because I always also hit the produce mart to buy my veggies and meat at half price. The POG haul was lasagna fixin's (which included the 3 pound jar of Prego.... I have tried many times to make my own sauce but I grew up on Prego.... my italian Gran used Prego.... I'm a Prego girl and I have no shame about it) and some stuff that is cheaper there like tuna that was on sale. Woo. Exciting.

Oh, picked up fixings so the hubby can make himself fried balogna tomorrow. I despise the stuff. He is only allowed to make it when I am not home and the house can be fully aired out before I return home.

Produce mart haul was pretty unexciting. Sadly, as more and more people have discovered this place, they've gotten a little more mainstream. But the place still rocks.

Home... did some cleaning, did some laundry (exciting life, huh?) and prepped a lasagna for tomorrow, in honor of the last ever episode of the Sopranos. Also, I have a wedding shower tomorrow (two cousins are getting married this summer/fall.... uh... not to each other, as that kinda reads....) so who knows when I'll be getting home.

My lasagna... no real recipe.... some ground sirloin and italian sausage and onions cooked... add red sauce to taste.... take your riccotta, mix in some thawed chopped spinach and choppped salami along with the egg.... layer it all with cheese and the no-boil noodles. Now it happily sits in our fridge for tomorrow.

And we had Taco Bell for dinnner. I suck... but the husband was happy (hey.... I gave him the choice between BLTs and Taco Bell. I blame him.)

Sudden thought that I might need to do bruschetta with my tomatoes tomorrow. Hmm. Also gives me a chance to raid the herb garden, which I always love.

Yeah. Fairly typical Saturday. Sadly, right down to the Taco Bell.

Ok. Hex is on in a minute. I've mentioned I love TV, right???
